Buy Now, Pay Later has evolved from a niche checkout option into a global financial force. In 2026, the industry finds itself at a crossroads: impressive growth metrics are colliding with tighter regulation, rising competition from traditional banks, and growing concerns about consumer debt accumulation.

A Market That Has Reached Scale

The numbers tell a clear story. Global BNPL gross merchandise volume reached approximately $560 billion in 2025, a 13.7% increase year over year. Revenue for service providers is estimated at $44.9 billion in 2025 and is expected to climb to $54.6 billion in 2026. The global user base now stands at around 380 million people, with forecasts pointing toward 670 million by 2028.

Asia-Pacific leads all regions with roughly 36.4% of global revenue and an estimated GMV of $211.7 billion. North America follows at 29 to 32% market share, while Europe accounts for about 25.9% of global BNPL revenue. Among individual countries, Sweden stands out with BNPL penetration reaching 23 to 24% of all eCommerce transactions.

Banks Are Moving In

For years, BNPL was synonymous with fintechs like Klarna, Affirm, and Zip. That dynamic is shifting. Traditional banks are embedding installment features directly into credit card products and digital wallets, competing on the same ground as standalone BNPL providers.

Bank-issued BNPL products scored 704 out of 1,000 in overall satisfaction, significantly ahead of fintech providers at 603. Trust, established customer relationships, and integrated account management are proving to be meaningful advantages. BNPL is transitioning from a fintech-led innovation to a mainstream banking feature.

Risk Signals the Industry Cannot Ignore

Between 34% and 41% of BNPL users have missed at least one payment. More concerning, 63% of users carry multiple simultaneous BNPL loans, and 33% use more than one provider at the same time. For merchants, BNPL offers measurable upside — average order values rise 15 to 40% and checkout conversion improves by around 30% — but transaction fees typically run 2 to 8%, higher than standard credit card processing rates.

Regulation: The Era of Oversight Has Arrived

The regulatory environment is changing fast. The European Union has brought BNPL within the scope of its consumer credit regulation. In the United Kingdom, the Financial Conduct Authority oversight framework takes effect in July 2026. Australia has expanded its national consumer credit law to cover BNPL products. BNPL is no longer a regulatory gray area.

The Road Ahead

AI-powered credit assessment is making underwriting faster and more accurate. Mobile-first BNPL experiences are expanding into physical retail. The integration of BNPL into digital wallets and broader embedded finance ecosystems points toward a future where pay-over-time is simply a seamless part of how consumers manage their money. For providers, 2026 marks the year BNPL truly grows up.
